Planning Day - Brenda's School

Brenda's school will pretty much stay the same as far as her books.




I have just ordered The Days Gone By by Ted Jacobs. It is poetry set to music. Emily used A Child's Garden of Song and loved it. I hope Brenda will enjoy this one as much. It has poetry by Eugene Fields (Wynken, Blyken and Nod), Emily Dickinson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, James Whitcomb and some others.





We are hoping to pick up more of Trial and Triumph - somehow it didn't make it in the rotation much last semester. It's a great book of the history of Christian martyrs.





Brenda's main change this semester is an apprenticeship with a man from church called "Stick" - that's "Mr. Stick" to you Brenda. :-) Stick trains labs for hunting and show. She is going this week for the first time with her Daddy and they will set her training schedule. We've been looking for a while for someone to teach her - so hopefully this will work great. She will be able to learn a lot about raising and training dogs. Hopefully Elmo (our new puppy who still loves to potty in the house) will learn lots too. The goal is eventually for Brenda to raise her own dogs to sell for her spending money. We are training her to find ways at home to make money so she doesn't have to go out in the work force - continuing with her training to be a Keeper at Home.








Here is a picture of the kennels. They have a 10 acres area to train. Brenda is so excited to learn it all.

Planning Day - Emily's School

I have spent most of the afternoon (around a wonderful nap!!) working on school plans for the upcoming semester. Most will stay the same. We are changing Emily's history. Troy is our history buff - so he is going to work on history with Emily. We decided to just start with the beginning of our country. They will read Stories of the Pilgrims by Margaret B. Pumphrey. We read this when Brian and Troy were younger and we lived in Gastonia. They enjoyed it very much.










The next book we will be adding to Emily's school is James Herriot's Treasury for Children. This is a beautiful story of animal/nature study. Brenda read this when she was younger. Maybe a story a week from this book.












We will finish up A Child's Garden of Verses and then begin When We Were Very Young by A. A. Milne (author of Winnie the Pooh). She is very excited about this one. Jan 18 is Milne's birthday, so we might have to have a little party to kick it all off?? :-)








We will continue with The Blue Fairy Book - (we read Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella last semester). Our new fairy tale will be Little Red Riding Hood. That should be very fun too.







I am very pleased with the way school progressed through the fall. We learned much and have lots still to go!! We are hoping to go much farther with sewing with Granny and then gardening this summer in our Keepers Series. (Emily's cooking is coming along wonderfully!!) We are also hoping to add in some swimming lessons and then maybe joining the swim team for some good exercise????

Stephen's First Wrestling Tournament

Stephen went to his first wrestling tournament today - hosted by Team Indian here in Gaffney. He did so good, even though he didn't win. The boy he wrestled first - Bo - won Stephen's division - the coaches said he's one of the best in the state. The second boy he wrestled, came in third place. So, I was really impressed with how good Stephen did - he got the first take down in both matches. The second match, he lasted twice as long as the first one. I can't wait to see the next time.

He's on the left in the opening of the video - wearing Team Indian All Black. I didn't have enough room to tape the whole match on my camera, but at lease I got a little bit.

Christmas 2007

Hope you enjoy a little of our Christmas. I feel like such a bad mama, I didn't get many pictures. I'll try and do a little better next year. This isn't too bad considering I got 35 minutes of sleep before Artie's mama woke us up letting us know Santa had been there!!! What's a Girl To Do?

I just re-listened to a wonderful tape by Doug Phillips of the Vision Forum - What's a Girl To Do? Great listening if any of you ever get a chance. It speaks to mothers and fathers as how to raise your daughters (and a little thrown in on sons too). Very sage advice.

I think I will have Brenda listen when school is up and running again.

Here's a meme from Footprints on the Frig. I so love books, so this was a pretty easy one for me.

1. One book that changed your life: The Spirit of Loveliness by Emilie Barnes - I so love Emilie's writings. She kinda stepped into my life through her writings and taught me of being ladylike. My second daughter is named after her. Also, Love Life for Every Married Couple by Dr. Wheat - a wonderful book for newly married - great for setting the stage for marriage. We studied this in a young married home group and Artie and I could always tell when the other person had been reading "the book"!!

2. One book that you have read more than once: A Charlotte Mason Companion by Karen Andreola- one of my favorite homeschooling books; I think I am about to reread Real Learning by Karen Foss - I just got it a couple of months ago and it made it to my favorite home school list too. Then the children's books are uncountable - probably the one I've read the most is Little House in the Big Woods - I love the list of kitchen foods like onions hanging on a rope and hams hanging from a hook.

3. One book that you'd want on a desert island: Bible

4. One book that made you laugh: God Uses Cracked Pots - Patsy Clairmont - I use to shake the bed trying not to laugh out loud when I would read this and Artie was asleep - he would look at me and say "are you reading "that" book again?"

5. One book that made you cry: Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom - not many books make me cry - but this one is so touching and life changing

6. One book that you wish had been written: how to mother 7 children and know they will all walk with God

7. One book that you wish had never been written: Harry Potter

8. One book you are currently reading: Sanctuary by Beverly Lewis, Created to be his helpmate by Debi Pearl, Mere Christianity with Brenda, Charlotte's Web with Emily

9. One book you've been meaning to read: Healing Life's Hurts Through Theophostic Prayer by Edward Smith - my best friend Daria sent this to me months ago and it's taking me a long time to get to it. What I've read so far is very moving - lots to think through. It has already changed the way I see God seeing me.

Once again, God has been so gracious to our family. Christmas was all we could hope for and more. We truly are blessed. We spent our holiday with our family (wishing our closest friends were nearby!!!) and enjoyed each other. Saturday we celebrated with Daddy and family,

Sunday we celebrated with Bobbie and family, Monday we celebrated with our church family, Tuesday we celebrated with Mimi and family and then today we ended it with another celebration at Bobbie's. WOW, what a fun time.

We had a wonderful Christmas celebration with our own "little" family. :-) We have been observing Advent and ended it with a wonderful Christmas eve time of devotion and prayer. We followed it up by watching the Nativity movie. It was a little long for the younger children. I think we will save it to watch again until they are a little older.

We did throw a couple of presents in a long the way. Everyone got new PJ's for Christmas eve.

My favorite present isn't even here yet. While Artie is on vacation, he is going to give the children's fort a makeover. We are gonna paint it, add two more swings (plus fix 2 that are broken), add a telescope and a couple of steering wheels, replace the broken monkey bars, add a sandbox off one side. We were originally getting the little children a child's four wheeler but decided this would be safer and give hours more fun. No running out of gas or waiting on their own turn.

Terry got Troy a phone from the Dollar Store. He was so excited because he knew Troy had been wanting a phone of his own!!! (he's so sweet!!!)

It was the day after Christmas.

The pastor of the church was looking over the cradle when he noticed that the baby Jesus was missing from among the figures. Immediately he turned and went outside and saw a little boy with a red wagon, and in the wagon was the figure of the little infant, Jesus.So he walked up to the boy and said, "Well, where did you get Him, my fine friend?"The little boy replied, "I got him from the church.""And why did you take him?"The boy said, "Well, about a week before Christmas I prayed to the little Lord Jesus and I told him if he would bring me a red wagon for Christmas I would give him a ride around the block in it."

God's Girls in Bethlehem

Here is Brenda's Discipleship Group. LeighAnn (the leader) is in the front with the red shirt. She took the girls to a Walk Through Bethlehem last weekend. They had so much fun. LeighAnn gathered them all a period outfit to wear while they were there. (she's so cute and creative) Brenda is the second from the right in the blue covering. It was a cold night, so the extra layer of clothes was a double blessing. I think it was really great for the girls. Brenda said she was scared of the soldiers who were taking the census. I would love to take the little children next year.

Christmas Eve Chili

This is one of Artie's favorite meals. He usually eats way to much and gets sick from it. :-) We usually have it on Christmas eve - it's so easy. If I was really good - I'd make it ahead of time, but I'm not there yet. I did just get all the ingredients on my grocery list - so I've started.

This recipe comes from an old friend named Michelle. We use to be in a Young Married Home Group together (back when we were young) :-) It so easy, you just open some cans and dump it all in. She use to fix it for work a lot before she was married. (See, I don't know how to cook anything on my own. I've just learned from all the ladies around me.)

Ingredients:

2 16 oz cans of diced tomatoes

2 16 oz cans of lite red kidney beans

2 8 oz tomato sauce

2 packets of chili mix

1 pound hamburger browned and drained

That's it. We usually triple this recipe for out family. It's good to eat in a big shell, or with chips or saltine crackers. We also like cheddar cheese sprinkled over each bowl.

Don't eat too much.

Mimi's Dressing

So, maybe one day I'll get good enough to take pictures after I cook things, but so far - not!! I did get some pictures of the girls making dressing at Thanksgiving - but nothing of the final product. I looked online and couldn't find anything that looked like our, so you'll just have to imagine.

This one is more time consuming that the fudge and pies (cause I need to have a turkey cooked first), but still not hard. (Brenda loves to cook the turkerys now. It's been over a year since I've really cooked one)

Ingredients:

corn bread (directions following)

6 Grands biscuits - cooked

1 onion - diced (Artie hates onions in things, so I puree mine - he does likes the flavor they give)

2t sage (or maybe a little more - that's what makes it to me)

6 cans chicken broth

gravy from turkey (I cook a large can of cream of chicken soup inside my turkey and pour a good bit of it in the dressing when it's done - I save the rest of it and make gravy with it - it's so yummy)

salt and pepper

Pepperidge farm herb dressing

bake 30 minutes

That's all the directions I have. We cook the cornbread and biscuits first and then let them cool. Shred both and add to the Pepperidge farm dressing - mix them up good. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and then add in the gravy from the turkey and finish it with the chicken broth. It should be a little soupy. Pour in a 9 x 13 pan and bake. It's a very full pan - be careful.

Bobbie's Cornbread (Artie's mama)

(I didn't fix dressing for a long time because I didn't know how to make cornbread. It's so easy - I can't believe it took me so long to ask how to make it!)

Ingredients:

1 cup self-rising cornmeal

1 cup self-rising flour

1 egg

2 T oil

1 cup milk or buttermilk

Combine all - bake 425 for 25 minutes. Easy enough? :-)

Mimi's Chocolate Fudge

While I still have my cookbook out, I guess I will post of couple more recipes. Here is Mimi's fudge that the girls and I cooked last week and Mimi's for school. We made three batches and it's so yummy!!!

Ingredients:

2 sticks butter

5 cups sugar

1 can of milk

Cook the above 13 - 15 minutes

Then add:

12 oz semi-sweet chocolate chips

1 large jar of marshmallow cream

1 cup peanut butter

1 t vanilla

Mix well until all melted. Pour in 9 x 13 pan. Also to set up and harden (sometimes I stick this in the freezer as well and then transfer to the frig)

Everything we cook is so simple - but this is a lifetime favorite. I've been eating Mimi's fudge since I was a little girl. We were talking the other day trying to figure out where the original recipe came from. She couldn't remember - maybe the back of the marshmallow cream jar? :-)

Mimi's Peanut Butter Pie

This is one of my favorite recipes from my Mimi (my daddy's mama). It is at most all our family get togethers at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Troy thinks you can't have these holidays without these pies (recipe makes two) and it's so easy to cook up. Often I will stick them in the freezer to firm them up good.

Ingredients:

8 oz cream cheese

2 cups powdered sugar

2/3 cups peanut butter

1 cup milk

16 oz cool whip

2 graham cracker crumbs

That's it - simple as can be.

Beat the cream cheese and powdered sugar together until smooth. Add peanut butter and milk and beat again until smooth. Fold in cool whip. Divide in pie crusts and refrigerate for several hours. (this is key, you can't whip this up right before a meal to serve - it's usually best made a day in advance)

It's so funny to think that people you know are reading your blog. I was talking to Karen (my daddy's wife) last night and she mentioned she had been checking out my blog. Then after I got off the phone I sorta had a panic, thinking that I might have listed their Christmas presents on here. I was trying to think back in my head what all I had written!!! I've looked back over everything this morning and it's all safe - but if not it would have been too late anyway, huh? So, I'm wising up - know you never know who's reading!!! :-)

Elmo's Biscuit

Well, the dog got a name, but not without some discussion. Terry wanted to name him Elmo - which we all thought was cute. Stephen was reading Biscuit at school that very night and thought the new puppy looked just like Biscuit - so that had to be his name. We were trying to decide the name and Stephen in his true form said that he was calling the dog Biscuit whatever we named him. So, to try and appease everyone - the dog's name is Elmo's Biscuit!!! :-) Pretty much everyone except Stephen is calling the dog Elmo and just as he said - Stephen is calling him Biscuit.

I am jumping in the Menu Plan Monday from I'm an Organizing Junkie .

Here is our menu plan for the rest of this week and going into next week... I'm hoping to get some things cooked up ahead this week to make the weekend and holiday run smoother. But, you never know... :-)

Tuesday - Fried Chicken, macaroni and cheese (not the real stuff this week - only the box type) :-)

Wednesday - Sandwiches for the littles, Artie and I out to dinner while they are in church services

Thursday - Spaghetti & French bread

Friday - Chicken Kabobs grilled on the grill - Artie's night to cook - start the celebration - Artie's off work until after New Year's!!!! :-)

Saturday - Clary Christmas - Karen's pick

Sunday - Quinn Christmas - soup and sandwiches

Monday - Christmas Eve - our traditional eve meal - chili (maybe I'll be smart and get this cooked ahead this year???)

Tuesday - Lunch at Mimi's - I'm bringing the turkey, dressing and peanut butter pies. (Gwyn, I promise I will get the recipe up soon!!)

Tackle It Tuesday

Today's Challenge is Christmas Shopping!!!

One of my all time favorite challenges!!!!!

I'm off to see what all I can cross off my list. I don't have much left (for me - if you saw my list, you might think it was a lot still!!) I have stocking stuffers (for 7), some specific gift wrappings bags, a couple of swap presents for Artie's family's Christmas, and just a couple of things left for the children.

It should be a fun run....

Update ... I did so good. Found many things I was looking for and a couple that just seemed to jump up in my buggy (mostly stocking stuffers). It was a fun afternoon. Just a few more items and I'll be already!!!

God is so good

I just got a little surprise today (a Christmas present from a lady at church) and feel so blessed. You know, as we were having babies, then more babies, then they just seemed to keep coming there for a while... :-) people would always make comments they thought were cute but always trying to make us doubt God's provision. What are you gonna do with all those kids, don't you know what causes that, what about college? They just went on and on.

It has been so fun to watch how God has provided. Artie has been blessed on his job - in every way. He has so much knowledge in his field now. People have blessed us right and left from day one. God has always met our needs. I remember when we had four little ones and were living in a temporary 2 bedroom house and found our we were having twins. I have to admit, my faith faltered a little, but learned to rest in God. When I went in the hospital to have the babies we were still living in our little two bedroom house, but when I was rolled out of the hospital with a baby in each arm, Artie was able to bring me to our new spacious home. Friends and family all pitched in and blessed us. The rooms had all been painted, there was food in the frig, and the beds were even all made and waiting on us. All I had to do was bring my sweet little babies in and keep on going. God is like that. I wonder if we had waited on the big house if the children would have ever came?

So, Brian's the first one to college next year. Thanks to all the wonderful gamblers in SC, the lottery had brought in a ton of money for college scholarships. (what's the verse about the wealth of the wicked?) Brian has a full scholarship for school - books and all.

God just keeps on using his people and those that don't even realize they are helping Him to do His work. I am so thankful!!!

I'm such a bad organizer. Really organization is my gift, but you know your gift can also be your worst quality sometimes.

Sunday night, Terry's 4 year old class was singing for the church's Christmas party. I got Troy and Brenda both to their own Discipleship group Christmas parties - with presents, money for dinner and snacks, got me and the littles dressed and cleaned up for church, got the dessert to take for the Christmas gathering, took the camera. I thought I was so ready. (Artie has a really long work weekend - and was still at work - so I was on my own)

But...the batteries on my camera died in the middle of the first song. Here you can see a little anyway. Terry is on the right side with the red vest on. We just keep playing that little part over and over for him. He loves to see himself on the big computer screen. :-)

Okay Chrissy, here's your picture. DeAnna's in the front again, seems to be a theme going here. I'm in the middle and Chrissy is the cutie with the pigtails. We were swimming in the kiddie pool at the apartment we lived in for a while when I was little. DeAnna and I have on matching bathing suits - while Chrissy is the star with the red one on.

It's so funny to hear from Tami, I just saw Chrissy at Wal-Mart today. She looks so good. I wish we all had a long weekend to hang out together!!! Maybe we need a weekend at Myrtle Beach or Gatlinburg!!! :-)

I got an e-mail from my cousin Tami this morning and it got me to thinking of older days. :-) We used to have so much fun together. I wish we got to see each other more often. I found this picture in an album of Tami and me and my other cousins. It was taken at my grandparents house. I'm the squinty one in the middle. Terri's the cool teenager standing up with the pigtails, Tami's in the front and DeAnna's in the back. Aren't we stylish??? :-)

Now I need to dig one up and embarrass, I mean show off, Chrissy too~~~ can't leave her out. She must have been a tiny toddler when this picture was taken.

Saturday in the Quinn Home

Things are clicking right along here at the Quinn house. Aside from Artie having to work all weekend, things are running pretty smoothly. Today is our work day. I am doing some much needed bedroom cleaning while the littles work on their rooms. Laundry will continue to run all day - as most days here.

I went today and got my Christmas stamps. I got the Madonna and Child by Bernardino Luini from the National Gallery of Art. I was so glad the post office had some left with me waiting so long. I'm hoping to get a good movie to watch tonight while I address the cards!! Last night we watched a good movie on the life of Joseph (Mary's husband) while Artie worked late. This was a movie towards our school study on his life. I'm hoping for Winter's End tonight - from the Sara Plain and Tall movies. That's one of my favorite winter time movies.

Brenda has her discipleship Christmas party tomorrow night, so she will be working on her gifts this afternoon after her room is clean.

Terry is suppose to sing with his 4 year old class at the Christmas Celebration tomorrow night at church. I hope with Artie's weird work schedule this weekend, we will be able to make it.

Troy has to work tonight, so he should be good to go. Still trying to make some more money for Christmas presents. I will have to take him shopping later in the week for his gifts. He is excited to be able to buy his presents with his own money for the first time this year.

So, off to clean....

A Little Early Christmas Present

The girls and I had our homeschool day at Granny's today. We went to do some Christmas cleaning for her. We were able to put clean sheets on her bed, clean her ceiling fans, vacuum and begin cleaning out her closet and packing away some summer clothes. It was a productive morning. But the main news was that Granny had a early Christmas present for them!!!

He's a feist. I have never even heard of that breed before yesterday. It is close to a Jack Russell. Sometimes they are used in the circus with clowns because they are so smart and easy to train.


Granny came home with us so she could see the boys reaction!!! Everyone is in LOVE!!! :-)


Stephen loves all animals. He will be so happy to have our own dog. Brenda is excited to begin training him.

Tonight we will work on a name. The top names so far are Jody, Elmo, Cutie, Dasher, SuggieBoog.... any more?

Tackle It Tuesday - Decorating Time

Susan and Janice at 5 Minutes for Mom host a Tackle It Tuesday challenge. Today they tackled Christmas Decorations.

We did too. Here are a couple of little pictures of our day.

We finally got the stocking hung... Yes, anyone new whose reading there are seven stockings for seven children!! :-)

For my friends, you will be happy to see Brian's stocking is hanging with the other children. He says he's planning on being here Christmas eve with us again this year as usual!! :-) God is so good.

We began our "real" Christmas study today (as apposed to our previous Christmas tree and candy cane study). We studied Angels - mainly Gabriel. We looked at how God sent him to proclaim to Mary of Jesus birth. We also looked ahead (which is a great thing to do during this time of Advent) as how the angels play a role in announcing the second coming of Christ. Here are our little angles hanging over our hallway door.

Our Christmas tree has been sitting in the living room for over a week now with no lights and no decorations. Artie is usually in charge of the lights, but has been so busy that he hasn't gotten them up yet. The girls and I decided to help him. Now, the tree is all lit and ready to be decorated this evening when he comes home. He will be relieved to have that crossed off his list and the girls loved it.

We also started One Wintery Night by Ruth Bell Graham today. We are reading one chapter a day - planning on finishing the day after Christmas. (The book goes from Jesus birth all the way to His death on the cross) They wanted to read more than the first chapter, but I think it is always good to leave them wanting more. They are looking forward to see what happens to Zeb tomorrow.

Gaffney Christmas Parade

As much as I'm ready to move from town to the country, there are days where it is handy! Today we bundled up and were able to walk (about 3 blocks) to the town's Christmas parade. It was a beautiful day. Everyone ended up shedding there warm gloves (it got almost up to 70) and loved the parade.

Artie had to leave the parade early. He met Troy's ROTC at Ryan's for lunch. The children and I walked back home and began our Saturday house cleaning projects. I went straight for laundry first!!! I think they ended up playing much more than any cleaning that needed to be done.
